World Water Day 2023 marked a significant milestone for Mponda Village in Zambia, as it became the host of Zambia’s National World Water Day event. This momentous occasion showcased the community’s dedication to sustainable water management and empowerment, epitomized by the inauguration of the community-built check dam.
The event drew esteemed guests, including the guest of honor Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, the UNESCO Regional Director, the German Ambassador to Zambia, the WWF Country Director, Mumbwa District Commissioner, and Chief Mulendema.
Under the warm embrace of the sun, members of our community worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was perfect. The air was filled with the sounds of joyous Zambian music as tents were erected, chairs were set in order, and speakers blared with excitement.
On the day itself, cultural performances by the Tigwirizane culture group and conservation songs by Conservation Education students added vibrancy to the event. The esteemed dignitaries graced the podium to emphasize the importance of water in our daily lives. Their words, under the theme “Accelerating Change,” resonated deeply with the gathered community, highlighting the urgent need for collective action in water conservation efforts.
Central to the festivities was the unveiling of the check dam—a testament to community initiative and resilience. Constructed by the community themselves under the guidance of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method, this semi-permeable dam promises to alleviate water scarcity during the dry season. With guidance from governmental water engineers, Mponda Village embarked on the construction of four dams in 2023, with plans for 35 total in the future.
The impact of these dams extends beyond water management, fostering self-sufficiency and ecological stewardship. At the first dam site, two organic community gardens flourish, nurtured by workshops on organic farming techniques. The establishment of dam committees ensures sustainable maintenance and equitable water usage, empowering local residents to take charge of their resources.
Looking ahead, Mponda Village remains committed to expanding its sustainable food system, with plans to initiate regenerative communal gardens at additional dam sites in 2024. Through collaborative efforts and a shared vision of change, Mponda Village exemplifies the spirit of World Water Day—accelerating progress towards a more water-secure and resilient future for all.
In the journey towards sustainability, every drop counts, and in Mponda Village, each dam signifies a step towards a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.
